4 Ways to Grow As a Photographer.

Ever since I started photography I had one goal, and that was to grow everyday and learn more.

It all began by following my curiosity, picking up a camera, learning about the gear and the art and practicing.

I watched thousands of YouTube videos, took thousands of photos, and still to this day feel the need to learn more.

Being a photographer is an ongoing learning process. It never stops and if it does then you have stopped growing as an artist.

Even though the goals change, there are some practices every photographer could do to help them stay curious and grow.

Here are a few.

1) Set Challenges

When I first started I used to download photography challenge sheets off the internet.

It would say things like “Challenge of the week: photography blue objects".

This was super helpful because it made me look for “blue”! It opened my eyes to new things.

I became curious and saw things around me that I did not before.

2) Explore Different Gear

Try different things. Photograph using your DSL or Mirrorless and then pickup your phone the next time and use that.

The new perspective that this gives you is very helpful in opening your vision and even finding out what works best for you.

3) Set Limitations

This is completely contrary to my 2nd point. Don’t use different gear!

Stick to one lens and one camera; at least for a while. It would also help if it’s a fixed/prime lens.

Let’s say you have a Canon + 50mm, and you only use that. The limitations will make you explore more.

This is a great form of practice and it makes you focus on the art rather than the gear.

4) Do More Personal Projects

Personal projects are a great way not to only learn photography but also project management.

Let’s say you want to do a portrait shoot with a model.

You are going to have to come up with a concept, contact models, find locations, put together gear, set dress, take care of costumes and maybe even hair and makeup.

The more you learn this process the easier you can delegate it to other people down the line as you grow as an artist.

Conclusion:

Do more. Practice more.

It might get hard to stay creative but take a break and let your vision lead you.

Photography is an ever learning process. Love the process, don’t compare yourself with others, set a vision, find what works best for you and just take more photos!
